Accessibility
The Anson Engine Museum is fully committed to ensuring its website is accessible and inclusive for all its users. We believe that web accessibility means that we need to try and make sure that all users, regardless of their physical and mental capability, are able to access the content and services on our website.
Our aim has been to make our site accessible to all who may be interested in finding out more about the Anson Engine Museum and the engines we have on site. Whilst designing and building this website we have taken into account these guidelines:
- The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) www.w3.org/
- The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA, part three) - www.disability.gov.uk/dda
These guidelines include:
- Allowing users to control text sizes.
- Using an easy to read font type.
- Ensuring suitable foreground and background colour contrast.
- Using clear and simple grammar.
- Providing meaningful text equivalents for pictures.
- Providing simple and consistent site navigation.
- Assigning access keys for key navigational elements.
- Ensuring the target of each link is clearly defined.
- Providing a full sitemap
- Providing navigational short cuts for users of text only browsers and page readers.
- Using appropriate structural mark-up to maximise browser support.
- Ensuring all content and functionality is available to users without content style sheet (CSS), image and script support.
Text Sizes
There are six different sizes of font.
To increase the text size:
- Select "+font size" on each page
- Internet Explorer: View > Text size > Largest
- Firefox: View > Text size > Increase
- Opera: File > Preferences > Fonts > Minimum font size (pixels)
Alternatively, scroll with the wheel of your mouse whilst holding down the control key.
Standards compliance
We are working towards complying with Priority 3 of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. We are continually making improvements to meet these guideline. Most pages on this site are WCAG AAA approved, meeting all Priority 1,2 and 3 checkpoints, with one main exception, the use of tables on the links page. We are working on this page doing manual checks for accessibility.
All pages on this site validate as XHTML 1.0.
All pages on this site use structured semantic markup. H1 tags are used for main headings, H2 tags for sub-headings.
Navigation aids
For those using screen readers there is the option to skip past the navigation to the content on each page. Link text is written to make sense out of context. Many links have title attributes to describe the links in greater detail. Links open in the same window with the exception of links to PDF and Word documents and links to external sites – which open in new windows.
Access Keys
Our main navigation options have been assigned keyboard access keys for users who do not use pointing devices (such as a mouse).
The access keys we have used are:
Alt + 0 - Sitemap
Alt + 1 - Home page
Alt + 2 - Accessibility
Alt + 3 - About Us
Alt + 4 - Visitor Information
Alt + 5 - Engine Hostries
Alt + 6 - Gallery
Alt + 7 - News
Alt + 8 - Links
Alt + 9 - Contact Us
Alt + s - Main Content
